The Harrar growing area is a distinct and unique zone, separated from the rest of Ethiopia by the Great Rift Valley. This area is extremely dry for nearly the entire year, and thus all the coffee here is processed in the Full- Natural, sundried style. Our broker, Royal Coffee, has been buying here for years, originally with MAO and the world famous “Horse” brand. After the passing of Mr. Ogsadey in 2006, Horse disappeared and it is not an exaggeration that the quality of coffee coming out of Harrar dropped precipitously. Now for the last several years, Royal Coffee has worked with Abdirashid Abdullahi, Ogsadey’s nephew, to develop a new mark that they call “Queen City.” What sets this coffee apart from other Harrars is that it only comes from a few very specific areas, and the intensive hand-sorting it undergoes to achieve what is as close to a near zero-defect preparation as is possible with such a rustic coffee. We are confident that this is the best Harrar coffee in the world, without a doubt.
